Scott Pelley\u00a0<\/strong>was dramatically fired on Tuesday from \u201c60 Minutes\u201d after his latest run-in with network brass. But he then fired back, accusing\u00a0Bari Weiss<\/strong>\u2018 regime of interfering with his work.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s certainly not the first time Pelley has clashed with the network, but the gloves really came off late last night in his battle with Weiss and her brand new \u201c60 Minutes\u201d executive producer\u00a0Nick Bilton<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

CBS insiders tell Page Six Hollywood that the focus will now shift to\u00a0Lesley Stahl\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0considered the last tether to the program\u2019s past as the most successful TV news broadcast in history. The 84-year old has spent almost the entirety of her illustrious career at CBS News where she began as a producer in 1971.<\/p>\n

\u201cScott wasn\u2019t popular with most of the talent,\u201d said one insider, adding of Stahl, \u201cif I were her, I would stick around and see what happens. She\u2019ll be 85 this year and her contract is up.\u201d Then again, \u201cIf I\u2019m CBS and I\u2019ve basically lost everyone, maybe I just bring in all new people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Status reported this month that Stahl and Weiss also have butted heads after\u00a0a\u00a0high-profile interview with Israeli PM\u00a0Benjamin Netanyahu\u00a0<\/strong>went to a different reporter.<\/p>\n

Pelley had a Monday morning meltdown at the venerable show\u2019s first staff meeting under new boss\u00a0Nick Bilton, reportedly saying the former Vanity Fair writer \u201cwill never be welcome here\u201d and has \u201cslender\u201d qualifications for the gig, while Weiss was\u00a0\u201cmurdering\u201d \u201c60 Minutes,\u201d (and he didn\u2019t mean \u2018killing it\u2019).<\/p>\n

By Tuesday, Pelley was let go. Bilton wrote in a memo (which subsequently leaked): \u201cYour antipathy to the future of the show has come through loud and clear. And I have heard you. I therefore write on behalf of CBS News to inform you that your employment with CBS is terminated effective immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0leaked memo\u00a0Bilton sent Pelley also said: \u201cYou hijacked my first meeting with staff to disparage me, my qualifications and my intentions with remarkable incivility and contempt. I welcome a diversity of viewpoints and respectful debate among the team, but this was nothing of the sort.\u201d The memo also accused Pelley of staging a \u201cperformative display of hostility,\u201d and said he had \u201cno interest in contributing to the future success of the show, or approaching my new tenure with a mind open to collaboration and progress.\u201d<\/p>\n

At nearly midnight NYC time last night, Pelley fired back in a statement that was\u00a0posted\u00a0on X by Puck\u2019s\u00a0Dylan Byers<\/strong>. \u201cLast month, \u201960 Minutes\u2019 lost its DNA when our entire senior leadership and two of our best on-air correspondents were cruelly fired without cause,\u201d Pelley wrote.<\/p>\n

He also accused the show of interfering with his reporting, alleging in a lengthy statement, \u201cnew management has instructed me to inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story. I\u2019ve been told to include assertions that are unverified. To date, in every case, I have managed to ignore these instructions or refuse them.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cRecently, politicians have been invited to choose correspondents for interviews on the broadcast,\u201d without specifying further, and that, \u201cincompetence and unprofessionalism in the new management have wreaked havoc. In a case involving one of my stories, the entire program came within 19 minutes of not getting on the air at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

CBS did not comment when we reached out last night.<\/p>\n

Weiss first shook up \u201cCBS Evening News\u201d by installing\u00a0Tony Dokoupil\u00a0<\/strong>as anchor, then she shut down CBS News Radio and most recently hired Bilton, a former tech columnist turned screenwriter, as the new \u201c60 Minutes\u201d boss with no TV news experience. Weiss also let go of former executive producer\u00a0Tanya Simon\u00a0<\/strong>and executive editor\u00a0Draggan Mihailovich<\/strong>, as well as correspondents\u00a0Sharyn Alfonsi<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Cecilia Vega<\/strong>, while\u00a0Anderson Cooper<\/strong>\u00a0flew the coop.<\/p>\n

A CBS source confirmed to Page Six Hollywood that Pelley was let go following his outburst. Bilton also wrote to CBS News staffers about his decision to can the respected journalist: \u201cI know how much Scott meant to many of you, and I don\u2019t say this lightly. I made repeated attempts to have direct conversations with him over the weekend, and this afternoon I tried to find common ground. That was not the path Scott chose.\u201d<\/p>\n

A staffer on Tuesday told us that morale at the network has been low after recent layoffs and shakeups. \u201cPeople were pretty [down],\u201d at Bilton\u2019s ill-fated \u201c60 Minutes\u201d staff meeting, a source told us.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe behavior is a lot in the building,\u201d a CBS News source told us of Pelley\u2019s hissy fit on Bilton. The insider added that, \u201cNick handled it really, really well, and he did not wither under that assault.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are not going to intimidate me in front of this group of people,\u201d Bilton shot back at Pelley during Monday\u2019s back-and-forth, according to The Post. \u201cI want that to be clear.\u201d Bilton ended the meeting by saying, \u201cEnjoy the bagels,\u201d a source said (always a good tagline). But after Bilton left, \u201cThe room erupted into applause and Nick definitely heard it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even after Pelley\u2019s exit, the ill will against Bilton from some corners of CBS is strong. An insider compared it to the rage at ABC when\u00a0Michael Strahan<\/strong>\u00a0left \u201cLive with Kelly and Michael\u201d to join \u201cGMA\u201d in 2016, leading to a very public feud with\u00a0Kelly Ripa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cNick took a dream job. Don\u2019t yell at him about it,\u201d a CBS News source told us. \u201cThere was a way for Scott to express his displeasure that didn\u2019t have to be what he did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pelley reportedly had another year left on his contract and was making around $5 million a year. Sources also told P6H that Bilton is pulling down $2.5M in his role.<\/p>\n

Monday\u2019s 15 minute-long heated-back-and-forth at Bilton\u2019s meeting is far from the first time that Pelley has clashed with his CBS bosses. He has a reported history of contentious behavior that goes back more than a decade.<\/p>\n

Pelley was relegated to \u201c60 Minutes\u201d in 2017 after being pushed out of the \u201cCBS Evening News\u201d anchor chair amid a clash with another former CBS News chief,\u00a0David Rhodes<\/strong>, now the executive chairman of Sky News Group.<\/p>\n

Pelley had taken over the anchor desk in 2011 from\u00a0Katie Couric<\/strong>, another ill-fated CBS experiment.<\/p>\n

Years after his \u201cEvening News\u201d ouster, in 2019, he\u00a0told\u00a0CNN\u2019s \u201cReliable Sources\u201d that he was axed from the anchor desk because he \u201cwouldn\u2019t stop complaining to management\u201d about a \u201chostile work environment,\u201d claiming he went to Rhodes as well as former disgraced CBS honcho\u00a0Les Moonves\u00a0<\/strong>about the issue. He alleged that his contract was not renewed after his complaints.<\/p>\n

CBS said at the time: \u201cScott was expressing his own opinion. We disagree. CBS News has been working hard to advocate for an inclusive, safe and dignified workplace for everyone at CBS News and Scott has been a supporter of these efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n

When he was\u00a0axed from the CBS anchor desk\u00a0amid low ratings in 2017, Page Six reported that, \u201cFurious fired CBS News anchor Scott Pelley ordered his assistant to clear out his office on Tuesday after he clashed\u201d with Rhodes. The acrimonious anchor apparently preemptively cleared out his office while he was on assignment in Syria, mucking up CBS\u2019 plans to announce the change.<\/p>\n

A source at the time told Page Six, \u201cScott is really angry. He had a huge fight with David Rhodes and decided, \u2018Right, I am going to clean out my office, I am done.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Page Six nicknamed him \u201cPoison Pelley\u201d after he\u00a0yelled\u00a0at one of the column\u2019s reporters in 2013: \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t last 10 seconds at CBS News!\u201d (We hear that after his Bilton\u00a0bollocking,\u00a0CBS staffers were passing around our old Poison Pelley clips to colleagues via email.)<\/p>\n

A CBS rep did not comment, including on Pelley\u2019s accusations last night of network meddling, and Pelley, who no longer has an agent, could not be reached.<\/p>\n
