Nor’easter threatens East Coast live updates: State of emergency for NYC, NJ and LI as 70 mph winds, dangerous flooding loom

Thousands were without power on the US East Coast on Friday night, while roads were flooding in some coastal New Jersey communities in the first major signs of a powerful nor’easter expected to create dangerous conditions through the weekend.

Tens of millions of people are in the path of the storm already beginning to lash the region with strong winds and rain.

Dangerous flooding is expected along the Mid-Atlantic coast, particularly near New Jersey and Delaware, according to the National Weather Service.

It’s likely the last gasp of beauty for a few days, as the city braces for a storm that promises high winds and the chance of flash flooding.

A full moon that’s peaking on Saturday night could make the incoming tides rise even higher as a nor’easter is expected to barrel toward NYC and the tri-state area this weekend, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

NOAA explained that the gravitational pull of the full Harvest Moon on Saturday could draw the ocean waters even higher, causing tides to significantly rise.

Saturday’s nor’easter forecast will likely bring high rip current risk and high surf with waves of about 7 to 8 feet, according to the NOAA.

New Yorkers and those in the crosshairs of the major storm can expect rain to begin as early as Friday evening and last through Sunday.

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherill declared a State of Emergency for eight counties in the state Friday afternoon, stating the powerful winds and heavy rainfall from the impending nor’easter.

The order covers Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Cumberland, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, and Salem counties, where forecasters expect the weather to hit the hardest.

“Starting tonight, the storm is expected to bring strong winds, heavy rain, and significant coastal flooding, with these eight counties facing the greatest risk,” Sherill said in a post on X. “I urge all New Jerseyans to take this storm seriously, stay alert, and follow local guidance.

“We’re prepared and will keep you updated as conditions develop.”

Residents in low-lying coastal areas, such as Sea Bright and Manasquan, have been encouraged to relocate to higher grounds as roads might become impassable.

Local officials are urging residents to stay away from flooded roads.

“You don’t want your vehicle driving through that much water at all,” Atlantic City Fire Department’s Scott Evans told ABC 7. “This is not a puddle. Your low lying vehicles will quickly become disabled and damaged, and you know we don’t want to see equipment and people get hurt.

“You could be hurt just trying to get out of your car, treading through some of these flooded waters down the streets.”

The CBGB Festival that celebrates iconic Lower East Side punk club of the same name is officially canceled due to the several storm.

“After consultation with local officials, we have made the difficult decision to cancel … CBGB Festival on September 26th due to forecasted severe weather and high wind conditions in the New York metropolitan area throughout the weekend,” according to the statement on the festival’s Instagram.

This marks the third major festival cancellation — Global Citizen and All Things Go NYC — for this weekend because of the expected dangerous weather conditions brought on by the nor’easter.
