Chiefs have Chris Berman to thank for 90-year-old trick play
The Chiefs went back, back, back into the history books for a game-changing play on Monday night.
Late in Kansas City’s 31-10 dismantling of the Broncos on “Monday Night Football,” Patrick Mahomes flipped a pass forward to Kenneth Walker III, and the running back, coming across from the left side of the line of scrimmage, did the rest of a 2-yard touchdown.
The play wasn’t actually from the mind of head coach Andy Reid, however. The Chiefs coach revealed Tuesday that ESPN legend Chris Berman actually gave him the play that went all … the … way.
“Chris Berman sent me that play, so that’s a 1936’er right there,” Reid told reporters. “Honestly, it was a great play. They executed it well. … We’ve run it before, just not that smooth.”
What was truly unique about this goal-line package was that Mahomes wasn’t the only quarterback on the field. Justin Fields, acquired from the Jets to be Mahomes’ backup, was in the backfield lined up next to the starting signal-caller.
Fields sprinted to his left as if ready to take a handoff or an option pitch from Mahomes, who instead gave the ball to Walker.
Walker, who had 173 rushing yards and two total touchdowns in his Chiefs debut, said after the game that watching film to learn the play was particularly difficult, for obvious reasons.
“The film we watched was probably from 1900, so it was hard to see,” the Super Bowl 2026 MVP said.
“But we worked it over and over in practice, and we felt like that was going to work — and it did.”
Whether Berman has more tape for the Chiefs to watch remains to be seen, but the Chiefs probably wouldn’t mind if he did.
