The Falcons waited almost as long as possible to make this announcement, with many speculating that Michael Penix Jr. could be the starter despite rehabbing from a torn ACL he suffered last season.

Tagovailoa had signed a one-year contract with the Falcons after bombing out of Miami despite a massive contract that the Dolphins chose to eat rather than have Tagovailoa play.

Tagovailoa struggled so bad in the preseason and in training camp that NFL Network reported that he made it “impossible” to be named the starter before they took a look at Penix, who has been rehabbing his injury.

It was ruled by Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski that Penix is not ready to play amid a lengthy recovery from injury.
