Baby Gabriel, saved from abortion, deserves the chance to fight for his life

Abortion or bust.

A California couple that hired a surrogate to carry their child — only to find the baby had a rare heart condition after 20 weeks in utero — allegedly was adamant: The unborn boy must die.

Even when the birth mother, McKenna West, apparently offered to relieve the parents of obligation and keep the kid herself, she said the couple refused, demanding abortion instead.

Why?

Gabriel’s plight, as an innocent in an exceedingly tough spot, has captured the hearts of a nation.

It’s also placed in stark relief the hypocrisy of some in the pro-choice crowd.

They favor choice, sure — but only if it’s their choice, and only when the “choice” is abortion.

West, according to the bio parents’ stance, should have no choice, other than a brutal late-term abortion, five months into the pregnancy. (Also: What choice did Gabriel have?)

West said she’d bonded with the baby and couldn’t do it. She said doctors in her home state of Alaska wouldn’t do it.

The bio parents, Nausheen Gilkar and Omar Ahmed, urged her to travel to Seattle, to terminate Gabriel there.

The baby was born this week in Dallas.

West went to Texas instead, where she might have birth-mother rights under state law. 

A court gave physical custody and medical-decision-making rights to Gilkar and Ahmed; it also ordered that the tot receive lifesaving care.

Good. Some media reports have indicated that the couple had earlier considered providing palliative care only, rather than lifesaving surgery, though the pair now disputes that characterization.

After West’s extraordinary fight to save the boy, he should be given every opportunity to grow and thrive — to experience life with all its joys and wonders and struggles.

His battle will be tough: Hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a congenital defect, leaves the left side of the heart underdeveloped and requires multiple surgeries and lifelong healthcare.

It’s now up to Gabriel, whom his bio parents call Rumi, to carry on his surrogate mom’s inspiring fight for his life.
