The fighter who knocked out a Hawaii Democrat has revealed the brawl was caused by the wannabe politician pulling out a knife and claimed he had a gun.

Kama Homan claimed Kirill Basin, 40, threatened to shoot the wife of a 61-year-old man after he complained Basin was playing music too loud on the Maui beach on Saturday.

Viral footage showed Homan battering Basin before leaning over his limp body and branding him a “Haole,” a pejorative term Polynesian islanders call white people.

Homan told Hawaii News Now: “I’m like, maybe I should intervene, and then as I got closer and closer, he was just getting more irate and violent and then saying stuff. ‘I’m going to hurt you’ or ‘I can injure you’ or ‘You like to scrap’ to the aunties.”

The footage showed Homan, who said he has mixed martial arts training, throwing a punch at Basin’s face after he allegedly instigated a fight and swung a beach chair at him.

The punch knocked Basin out cold, and Homan stood over the man trying to wake him up.

Homan said he found the knife after Basin allegedly threw it into the ocean, before he turned it over to police.

“He ended up pulling the knife out on me… and that was obviously a game changer when I knew he was off,” Homan said.

Basin made a court appearance Tuesday in handcuffs on two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening stemming from the fight as he remained in jail on $1 million bail.

Both of the charges came from his altercation with Homan. His attorney said he believed the bail amount to be “outrageous.”

“These are just allegations. My client has a presumption of innocence,” Basin’s attorney Brandon Segal said. Segal disputed any account that Basin had a weapon during the altercation.

“There’s no evidence in any of these videos that have been circulated tremendously that he ever had a knife in his possession. He never had a firearm in his possession,” the attorney insisted.

Basin was previously arrested in May on another charge of terrorist threatening in the first degree after he allegedly pulled a gun on officials after storming a government building.

The court recommended Basin undergo a mental health assessment.

Homan is a local construction business owner and was nominated for Young Small Businessperson of the Year by the Maui Chamber of Commerce in 2024, according to his website.

He left no doubts about whether he was afraid of the unruly Basin, who is challenging Rep. Jill Tokuda for her Hawaii congressional seat in the state’s second congressional district.

“No. I didn’t even know who the guy was,” he said. Homan said his motto in life is to “do what’s right because that’s what we should do.”

Elon Musk weighed in on the fight footage on Tuesday, posting on X: “FAFO.”
