Yankees making drastic Anthony Volpe change after demotion for George Lombard Jr.

It’s a notable shift since Volpe has not played second base in the majors and the organization did not have him take reps at the position earlier this year when he was in the minors.
Volpe was demoted to Triple-A alongside pitcher Angel Chivilli and outfielder Jasson Dominguez following Monday night’s 13-7 loss to the Cardinals.
Highly-touted shortstop prospect George Lombard Jr. has been called up to replace Volpe.
The decision to play Volpe at multiple positions comes after confusion surrounding his desire to play other spots in the field if needed.
Last month, Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay claimed that Volpe refused to take a minor league assignment to play second base, saying he would only play shortstop.
Volpe strongly rejected the rumor before Kay walked it back the following day.
The former first-round pick manned second base in just two games in the minors, both in 2021.
In 56 games this season, Volpe is batting .240 with one home run and a .646 OPS.
His defense has often been a conversation topic during his duration with the Yankees, and he now has three more errors (56) than home runs (53) since first joining the big-league club in 2023.
