Greg Olsen is the wild card with Tony Romo’s uncertain CBS future
Greg Olsen may have a path back to an “A” booth.
With Tony Romo’s future uncertain at CBS following his OWI arrest that led to him being placed on leave “until further notice,” Olsen, a Fox commentator, could be a potential replacement, according to Puck.

JJ Watt, who is filling Romo’s spot in the CBS “A” booth alongside Jim Nantz, is reportedly also considered a potential replacement should the ex-Dallas quarterback and CBS part ways.
There’s still a long ways to go before CBS may have to fill Romo’s position, but The Athletic reported recently how the 46-year-old may face an uphill battle to return to his previous position.
Andrew Marchand wrote that Romo will “have to make quite a case to get his top job back.”
Romo has a scheduled Sept. 21 court date in Wisconsin stemming from his July arrest, and Marchand reported that CBS is already planning to withholding him from its upcoming seminar for on-air talent, the Week 1 Packers-Viking clash on Sept. 13 and the Week 3 Cowboys-Ravens game in Brazil on Sept. 27.
That raises questions about whether CBS would bring Romo into the fold roughly one-quarter of the way through the season, especially with all the negative headlines that will bring.
Romo is still owed $72 million over four years, but The Athletic noted how his contract has a morality clause that CBS could potentially cite if it chooses to end the pact early.
In that case, Olsen may have his shot to once again be calling the premier game on a network.
Olsen served on the “B” booth alongside Joe Davis for the second straight season in 2025, having been replaced in the “A” booth by Tom Brady.
He joined Fox for the 2021 season and worked alongside Kevin Burkhardt, and the two received the bump to the “A” spot after Troy Aikman and Joe Buck left for ESPN.
Olsen spent two years in that role before Brady made his high-profile transition to broadcasting and became Burkhardt’s color analyst.
The former 41-year-old Panthers star has developed into one of the top NFL analysts in short time, earning Sports Emmys for Outstanding Personality/Event Analyst for 2025, Top Event Analyst for 2023 and Outstanding Emerging On-Air Talent for 2022.
He also called Super Bowl 2023 for Fox.
And Olsen has the ability to leave for another job should it be considered a promotion, like this would be, according to the Puck report cited by Pro Football Talk.
Watt could emerge as Olsen’s potential competition if the job opens, and the former star defensive lineman only joined a broadcasting booth last season.
After two years on “The NFL Today,” Watt worked with Ian Eagle in CBS’ “B” booth.
