Anthony Fauci’s own diary proves what a despicable villain he truly is

As COVID cases and deaths began to soar in the spring of 2020, America desperately needed a trustworthy public-health leader. Instead, we got Dr. Anthony Fauci — and now his diary entries from that time are showing just how incredibly unworthy of the nation’s trust he truly was.

Time and again, his private notes contradict what he was telling the world at the very same time, and the stories he’s spun up since to protect his unearned reputation.

For starters, he insisted time and again that the “lab leak hypothesis” was a wacky conspiracy theory, that the virus had jumped naturally from animals to humans, presumably at the “wet market” in Wuhan, China.

Yet the diaries reveal that he knew early on that it had not come from the wet market, and was confronted with scientists he’d selected who argued with strong evidence that “lab leak” was the truth — and that the bug was likely bio-engineered in the Wuhan Institute Virology.

We also now know that he himself referred to research at WIV that he had funded with federal cash as “GOF,” meaning “gain of function,” altering viruses to make them more deadly or contagious to humans — though he later testified time and time again under questioning by Sen. Rand Paul that he’d never funded such work.

Since China’s rulers destroyed all records long ago to cover up their guilt in the death of millions, we’ll never know for sure if Fauci’s funding played a role — but his behavior clearly shows he feared it did, and used all power at his disposal to stop the ugly truth from coming out.

In particular, the way he pushed hard for media and social-media companies to suppress or ban contrarian voices about COVID’s origins, and even worked with Beijing to ensure that international investigations would never get close to being able to examine the evidence.

He engaged in the same information-control to stomp on experts who questioned the wisdom of locking everything down to fight COVID, while bragging to his diary about how he got the likes of then-Mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Gavin Newsom to lock down New York City and California.

Years later, he turned around and claimed he’d never pushed for mass lockdowns: The diaries again prove him a liar.

Of course, they also expose his boundless vanity: “If you don’t have a crush on this man,” reads the caption to a gigantic picture of himself that Fauci pasted lovingly into his scrapbook, “do you even care about public health?”

It was an image he worked tirelessly to burnish, wining and dining privately with CNN’s Jack Tapper and other elite media stars who then breathlessly sold him as the expert.

His ego became obscenely obvious by the time he declared that he was “the science,” but now we see him fretting about “attacks upon me by far-right elements” and the “insidious campaign to discredit me” as other experts insisted mass lockdowns made neither scientific nor economic sense.

And his personalization of scientific debate fed into the lunatic politicization of COVID policy, such that America kept its schools closed longer and tighter than the Europeans, and insisted on masking toddlers who were never at risk.

That politics led to the lunatic Biden presidential pardon that likely immunizes Fauci from criminal charges for his perjury, abuses of government power and so on.

But it shouldn’t leave him out of reach of civil liability, nor of the feds clawing back at least some of the private fortune he managed to amass in a lifetime of “public service.”

Above all, though, Dr. Anthony Fauci needs to go down in history as the exact opposite of what any free country should elevate to any position of trust: He is a villain, not a hero.
