City Hall tosses iconic green doors for ‘poopy brown’ ones, devastating NYC wedding photogs and newlyweds

The iconic green doors that City Hall newlyweds burst through after tying the knot have been replaced by “poopy brown” slabs — fudging wedding-day photos and robbing couples of a Big Apple tradition.
The City Clerk’s Office, which actually hosts the civil unions, suddenly replaced the famous gilded doors last week with dual brown doors, one of which is covered with plywood.
“I hate to be vulgar, but they’re poopy brown, and it’s so annoying!” photographer Gianna Stern told The Post, adding that other photographers are “comparing it to cardboard.”
The previous doors were “so iconic and so traditional and just so like quintessential City Hall,” she continued, noting that a picture in front of the green doors is always a top request by brides and grooms.
“It’s a little bit disappointing because so many couples that don’t do full-blown weddings or big parties and just want the simple, cute, traditional city hall elopement that New York brings, we always just go to those same shots that are just always bringing that kind of atmosphere connected to New York to their special day,” said Stern, who photographed the eloping couple caught in the Knicks ticker-tape parade last month.
“Every couple — no matter which way, shape or form of the wedding, any generation, any location — want those iconic, just-married exit photos. Those doors bring a little bit of that piece of normalcy and tradition to their elopement, which is sometimes small.”
But the good news is that the ugly brown slabs might only be around for a few more months.
The dirty-looking doors are temporary while the city Department of Citywide Services works on making the entryway ADA-compliant.
The iconic spot will be reinvented to have French doors rather than the single hinge it previously sported. The entryway will also have automatic door control.
Like the previous set, the doors will also be made of bronze — meaning they will be golden for some time before turning back to their Lady Liberty green hue.
“The gilded doors at Worth Street are beloved by generations of newlyweds—and they will be returning, more accessible than ever before!” a spokesperson for the agency said.
