Cops shoot maniac armed with shotgun outside NYC house — then find 2 dead inside: sources

Cops shot a gun-wielding madman when he refused to drop his weapon outside a Queens home after a “large fiery explosion” on Saturday — and then discovered two of his family members dead inside, police said.

The NYPD responded to Ocean Crest Boulevard near Hartman Lane in Far Rockaway around noon after receiving a 911 call of shots fired inside the home, police said. 

“The caller stated that her husband was armed and had a history with mental illness,” Assistant Chief Christopher McIntosh said. 

The wife also told 911 that her 33-year-old husband, Kegan Thomas, “killed them,” he added. 

When police arrived, the wife was outside and told them she heard gunshots “and when she walked into the room she saw a body on the bed,” McIntosh said, adding that she immediately ran out of the building and called 911.

“Additionally, she told responding officers to be careful because her husband has a shotgun,” he said.

By 12:15 p.m., cops had called in the NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit. As they were about to forcefully enter the home, “a large fiery explosion erupted from the house,” according to McIntosh. 

The gunman, who was clad in a bulletproof vest with additional ammunition in it and wielding a shotgun, emerged from the house and confronted cops, the sources said.

The suspect was shot by multiple officers after refusing “numerous commands to drop the shotgun,” a police source said.

“Officers issued numerous verbal commands for the subject to put his hands up so he could drop the weapon,” McIntosh said.

“After failing to comply with repeat commands to put his hands up and still armed (with) the shotgun, officers discharged their weapons and struck the subject.”

Police discovered two bodies with bullet wounds inside the home — who were believed to be the man’s mother-in-law and sister-in-law, sources told The Post.

The suspect was taken to Jamaica Hospital in critical condition and was undergoing surgery, the sources said. He has no criminal record or mental health history with the NYPD, according to McIntosh.

“Again, it cannot be overstated that the bravery of the officers who responded today … they ran toward the danger with no hesitation,” he said.
