Patrick Mahomes shockingly set to be ‘fully cleared’ seven months after tearing ACL

Chiefs fans will likely have their two-time MVP quarterback return sooner rather than later.

Patrick Mahomes is expected to be “fully cleared” this week, per Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.

Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL in Week 15 and underwent surgery on Dec. 15.

Mahomes was a full participant at Chiefs OTAs in May in both individuals and 7-on-7s, donning a yellow non-contact jersey.

During Phase III, the team kept him out of 11-on-11 drills as a precaution. Mahomes also took part in mandatory minicamp, putting him on track to be ready for camp in July and August.

Chiefs quarterbacks and rookies will report to training camp three days earlier than the rest of the team, so Mahomes will be back at Kansas City’s facility in St. Joseph, Mo., on Friday.

However, Mahomes will have to face defenders for the first time on the surgically repaired knee.

Breer also noted the toughness of Kansas City’s offseason programs, noting that Mahomes has previously played in preseason games.

During training camp, the Chiefs will also see action under center from Justin Fields, Chris Oladokun and rookie Garrett Nussmeier.

It remains to be seen whether Mahomes will generally split time early in camp, and how the team will handle his reps in the preseason.
