Brendan Sorsby barred from playing in the CFL in latest setback after gambling scandal

Another 2026 opportunity is off the table for Brendan Sorsby.

The former Texas Tech quarterback, who unsuccessfully tried to join the NFL this year, has been barred from competing in the CFL in the upcoming season, the league said in a statement to USA Today on Friday.

“Upholding the integrity of the league and ensuring fair competition are paramount to the CFL,” the CFL said. “The allegations involving Brendan Sorsby are serious and concerning.

“At this time, the CFL will not register a contract for him, and no team will be permitted to add him to its negotiation list.”

While it was never reported that Sorsby had any interest in joining the CFL for the 2026 season, it is another option to play football competitively that he can not use.

Sorsby learned on Tuesday that the NFL declined to hold a supplemental draft.

The NFL said the draft was declined because the quarterback did not accept the consequences of his admitted sports betting, according to Larry Ferazani of the NFL Management Council.

“Even after receiving notice of the NCAA’s decision rescinding your college eligibility in May, you sought to avoid the consequences of that determination through litigation rather than accepting responsibility for your actions, and you pursued entry into the NFL only after abandoning those efforts,” Ferazani said.

The latest news comes after a convoluted few months that started for the 22-year-old after transferring to Texas Tech.

According to multiple reports, it was uncovered during a lawsuit hearing that Sorsby placed multiple bets totaling more than $90,000. These bets included some on his own team, Indiana, in 2022.

The most likely road to the NFL for Sorsby now seems to be entering the 2027 NFL Draft, which is expected to be loaded with quarterback talent, like Arch Manning and Dante Moore.
