Mets trade David Peterson to Cubs as they dump struggling lefty
After the Mets royally failed to take care of business on the field in a doubleheader against the Cubs on Wednesday, they decided to do some business off it.

The Mets traded pitcher David Peterson to Chicago in exchange for the Cubs’ No. 13 ranked prospect Cole Mathis, The Post’s John Heyman reported after a disastrous night for the Amazin’s at Citi Field.
The trade came in just hours after the Cubs swept the Mets by a combined score of 20-8 in a doubleheader.
Peterson could be just the first of many players on their way out of Flushing as the Mets season continues to spiral out of control. According to Heyman, Freddy Peralta, who has not pitched to expectations this season, could be another top trade piece for the Mets to deal before the trade deadline.

No longer the longest-tenured Met, Peterson lost his spot in the starting rotation this season after going 3-6 with a 6.09 ERA across 16 games (eight starts). The 6-foot-6 hurler had allowed 13 runs through 10 ²/₃ innings pitched over his past three appearances.
The Mets get a 22-year-old prospect out of the deal. Mathis, who the Cubs selected in the second round of the 2024 MLB Draft, is a third baseman. Between his time in Low-A and High-A this season, Mathis has 10 home runs and 39 RBIs to go along with his .272 batting average and .981 OPS.
